Student Planners
The students are strongly encouraged to buy and use the Anderdon Student Planner available during the first week
of school. The cost is $4.00 with the rest being subsidized by the school council.
The students will use the planner to keep track of homework and to note important dates and activities. Planners can also be a very valuable source of communication between home and school. I am asking that you sign or initial the planner every school day starting the second week of school. This will provide you with an opportunity to check for homework or any notes from myself or the school. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please feel free to call me at the school or to make a note in the planner.
Nutritional and Fitness Breaks
Our Class Schedule:
Students will be receiving a copy of our class schedule in the coming days. Final revisions are still being made to the school-wide schedule, so as soon as this is complete our classroom schedule will be finalized.
Supplies Needed
Scholastic Book Orders
I will be sending Lucky and Arrow book orders home with your child each month and you are invited to take advantage of the reasonably priced books available. All bonus books and dividends will be used to increase the classroom library. If you wish to purchase books, please fill in the order form and send it along with a cheque (no cash) for the appropriate amount.
Spelling
This year they will have a specific list of words based on a common skill for the children to use each week. As the weeks go on the lists will also include Theme words for Social Studies and Science. Each week your child will write the week’s spelling words in their planner. During the course of the week, they will be working on board exercises related to the week’s words. On Day 5 a dictation of the words will be given. These words will form the basis of the words that they will be learning to spell correctly in their written assignments. Please help your child practice these words for their dictation. Also encourage them to use the learned words in any writing they may do either at school or home.
Math
Patterning - The concept of sorting is further investigated as children recognize how the elements of a pattern are similar and different. Patterns can be represented in a variety of ways - a repeated sequence of materials, sounds, movements, or visuals. As children participate in activities that require them to create, extend, and define patterns, they will come to appreciate the predictability of a pattern. Understanding that the same pattern can be found in many
different forms helps children as they apply pattern rules to numbers.
Students sort according to at least two attributes. Students use these attributes (colour, size. shape, number) as they create, extend and represent patterns.
Social Studies/Science
Students will be investigating six major themes this school year. At the end of each one a folder containing much of the work covered will be sent home for you to see.

Nutritional and Fitness Breaks
- Students will be eating in their classrooms at their own desks at the start of each nutritional break (20 minutes). They will be supervised by teachers and classroom monitors. Then they will be going outside for a fitness break (recess) (20 minutes). Since they will be having enough time to eat their snack during the nutritional break no food will be going out during the fitness break as this will cut down on litter and unwanted pests (wasp and bees) on our playground.
- Each child will be responsible for keeping their desks and the area under them clean and free from food and garbage. Although talking will be allowed, they are to remain seated and use inside voices. If there is a problem with nutritional break behaviour you will be advised. Anyone who cannot follow the rules will be asked to eat by themselves in the hall for a short period of time.
